Work in Progress

Here is a new doll that I am working right now. The green top part is from a beautiful cashmere sweater that was given to me. Unfortunately for the previous owner, it had become holey. Fortunately for me, I could cut around that portion.

Her legs are from jeans that were also very torn apart and outgrown. Her hair is pink fabric leftover from a shirt that my mom made me (she used to make all of my clothes growing up). Yes, that fabric is definitely vintage. (ugh, I am getting old)

As you can (barely) see from the photo, this doll also features hand embroidery I designed and did. Her face will also be hand embroidered.
This doll is larger than my previous dolls.

Hopefully she'll be ready in time for First Friday tomorrow evening. I hope to finish her up tonight.

Thursday Green Artist of the Week - Various!

This week I am featuring a few of my pa team peeps. Each item uses recycled components. Each of these sellers are from PA!

Made with recycled cardboard.

I am really a Pepsi girl myself, but I still LOVE these postcards!

Made with a vintage tin.
This pin cushion is magical, too! It has magnets so it picks up your pins! How genius!

spoon necklace

spoon necklace, originally uploaded by B.B. Bellezza.

You've probably seen this new necklace either in my Etsy Shop or a photo in my blog, but I also wanted to mention some of the details of this cool necklace.

This necklace is made from an upcylced stainless steel spoon. It was abandoned, so I snatched it up and cut off the spoon part and added the pretty pressed glass flower by wire-wrapping to the spoon. It comes on a cotton cord.

I also have a similar necklace in blue, as well as a necklace at my Building Character stand in green.

I think that the handle of this spoon is so pretty that is was just begging to be jewelry.

News:

I am officially going to primarily focus on recycling and reusing a vast majority of the materials used in my arts and crafts. I have been expanding my line to include items other than just jewelry, and this will continue to expand. My artist statement is on my website: www.BBBellezza.com

Look for more dolls, more coasters and (you are the FIRST to hear this) clothes!! I have so many more ideas than I do time, so please be patient, but you will be seeing new items soon!

In other news, I have been featured on the front page of Etsy.com and on a couple of blogs. If you want to learn about my daily routine, you can check out this feature on handmade in pa.

New features on my blog:

Boy, time is quickly slipping by (my mom always said it went faster the older you got!) I have added a couple new features (and revived older ones!) to the blog. I have been swamped lately so I have already missed a couple of these features, but rest assured, I intend to have them regularly soon!

Mondays: I hate Mondays, and I need something to look forward to on Monday. Each Monday I will have some fun “interactiveness” for everyone to participate in. Each week will be different (or sometimes it may be the same!), but look for this to begin next Monday! Small prizes will be involved most weeks!

Tuesdays: I will be featuring simple, quick and easy tips to live a greener lifestyle. Some of the tips may be things that you already do and seem so simple, but they may not be for others. I hope you enjoy these tips and feel free to contact me and/or comment with your tips.

Wednesday: What I am working on.

Thursday: Green artist of the week! Please let me know if you have suggestions or are a green artist yourself and wish to be featured.

Friday: I will let you know about what events I plan to do over the weekend.

There may or may not be posts on weekends, and I have no structure for the weekends!

This, of course, is subject to change based upon how crazy my schedule is, but I plan to try my hardest to follow this schedule. I will also have other posts of things that interest me and tutorials here and there as well!

Weekend in Review

I had the most fabulous weekend, Saturday in particular. It was the perfect mash of business - road tripping - food - and entertainment.

The day started out in the morning with a trip to the adorable West Reading, PA. I have definitely been here before, but don't remember it being so cute!

There were gigantic flower pots everywhere and these awesome birch (?) trees with the bark peeling off!
The reason I was in West Reading was to drop off things to Hello Bluebird, a new consignment shop that I am so very happy to be in. (Look how happy! I am such a dork...and my hair is still wet and flat on my head, but here I am in the store:)

From there we went a couple "goose hunts," as Jim and I call them, trying to find the abandoned Pennhurst State Mental Hospital (now the National Guard is there, so we're not sure if they tore it down, or we just can't access the area where it stands. We weren't about to mess with the National Guard trying to find it!) We also went in search of "Midgetville" that we read about in "Weird Pennsylvania." (One of the few places we have to find yet in the book!) We have mixed feelings about our findings there!

But then we went on to Philadelphia!

I had never been to Pat's, but I am already craving another! The line was intimidating, but it was super fast. By the time you get the order out, they have taken your money and given you your cheese steak. (You order cheese steaks at one window, fries and soda at another.) Plus, you can use the time to practice ordering. Jim told me I still ordered like a tourist. Whatever, I was a tourist!

The experience was fun and the cheese steak amazing! Now we have to taste Geno's across the street!

From there we went to Art Star (Sorry no photo!), which is a great gallery/shop.

Then we went to the Eastern State Penitentiary. The country's first penitentiary. It is massive and quite amazing. You can tour most of the ruins. (You can see the Philadelphia skyline in the background.)

And then, the whole reason we even were coming to Philadelphia to begin with: Handmade Nation! We attended the Philadelphia screening. I have been waiting to see this for years when I heard about the filming of it while it was being filmed. I thought it was awesome. Yes, I am a geek who adores documentaries. They are probably my favorite kind of movie. I love hearing people's stories. (Also why I love This American Life.)

Afterwards we stayed for the question and answer session. Then Jim surprised me by buying me the Handmade Nation book, so I got it signed by Faythe Levine and got to meet and talk to her. (By the way, I have already read the entire book!)

This movie and the book have inspired me immensely. Beware: I haven't even scratched the surface of what I want to do with art and crafts. Not even close.
